Whitsun Camp Day

Day two at Whitsun Camp shifted gears as 863 (Thurston) Squadron moved into a full day focused on leadership, teamwork and communication. Building on the momentum from arrival day, our NCO team took centre stage, delivering a carefully planned programme of activities designed to challenge cadets whilst developing their ability to lead others and work effectively as part of a team.

Following the previous evening’s reconnaissance and planning, the NCOs constructed and delivered a series of leadership exercises that tested problem-solving, communication and cooperation under pressure.

One of the first scenarios of the day saw cadets tackling “Op. Blackvale Extraction”, a challenging mission involving the recovery of a biohazard from a designated area. Teams had to work together, communicate effectively and think logically to complete the objective whilst operating under a realistic scenario.

Another activity, “Op. Fallout”, tested communication skills in a completely different way. Cadets were required to relay information over radios to a separate build team that could not physically see the task in front of them. Success relied entirely on the accuracy of instructions, active listening and clear communication. It quickly became apparent that explaining something is often much harder than expected, especially when every detail matters.

Both activities highlighted an important lesson: effective leadership is not simply about giving instructions. It is equally important to know how to listen, support others and be led as part of a team. Throughout the day cadets developed valuable skills that will benefit them both within the RAF Air Cadets and beyond.

Halfway through the activities, catering provided a much-appreciated lunch break. Arriving at exactly the right time, it gave everyone an opportunity to recharge, cool down and reset energy levels before heading back into the afternoon programme.

With temperatures again climbing throughout the day, heat management remained a priority. Staff and NCOs continued delivering regular briefings and reminders around hydration, rest and recognising signs of fatigue. Cadets managed the warm conditions exceptionally well and approached the day sensibly and maturely.

After a demanding day of leadership exercises, everyone returned to accommodation for some well-deserved downtime. An entire camp of slightly sun-soaked and thoroughly exhausted cadets and staff took the opportunity to wash, rest and recover after a busy day.

Dinner brought a welcome serving of spaghetti bolognese before cadets moved into evening free time. What followed was genuinely great to see. Rather than disappearing behind phone screens, cadets filled the evening with sports, games and imaginative activities, spending time talking, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

One of the strongest parts of camp life is often the moments between the planned activities. Watching cadets build friendships, develop confidence and simply enjoy being together reminded everyone exactly why experiences like Whitsun Camp remain so valuable.

Leadership may have been the theme of the day, but teamwork were equally on display. Day two complete — and plenty more still to come.
