This night marked a monumental occasion for 863 (Thurston) Squadron as our newest recruits completed their journey, transitioning from wide-eyed novices to fully-fledged cadets. The atmosphere was electric with pride and excitement as family, friends, and staff gathered to celebrate the culmination of weeks of hard work, determination, and growth.
A Night to Remember
The evening began with a warm reception at our squadron HQ, where guests enjoyed refreshments and mingled, eager to support the recruits on their big night. The air buzzed with anticipation, conversations punctuated by laughter and glances towards the recruits, who stood tall and composed, exuding the confidence and discipline they had worked tirelessly to achieve.
As the clock struck 2000, we made our way to the sports hall at Thurston Community College. The lighting and carefully arranged seating lent the space an air of gravitas, befitting the importance of the ceremony. It was a poignant moment—a symbolic march towards a new chapter for these young individuals.
The Parade
Under the watchful eyes of proud parents and siblings, the recruits stood in perfect formation. The polished shine of their shoes, the crisp folds of their uniforms, and the determined glint in their eyes told a story of dedication. Weeks of learning, refining, and pushing through challenges had brought them to this pivotal moment.
Our Padre, as part of the ceremony, provided us with an inspiring address, reminding everyone of the values that underpin the Air Cadets: respect, discipline, and teamwork. His words resonated deeply, not just with the recruits but with all present. Following this, a special guest—a former cadet, now wing commander who had gone on to achieve great heights—delivered an uplifting speech, sharing how their time with the Air Cadets had shaped their journey.
Falling Out and Rising Up
Then came the moment we had all been waiting for the passing out parade. As the recruits executed their final drill sequence, flawlessly and with precision, a wave of applause rippled through the hall. This wasn’t just a drill; it was a powerful display of their journey—a testament to their growth and resilience.
One by one, each recruit’s name was called, and they proudly received their certificate. The smiles on their faces, some shy, others beaming, were unforgettable. For many, this was more than a certificate; it was a badge of honour, a symbol of their transformation.
Finally, the command was given: “Recruits, fall out!” For the last time, they marched as recruits and, with a final step, re-joined the squadron as 863 (Thurston) Cadets. The hall erupted into cheers, clapping, and a few tears—proof of the immense pride and emotion shared by everyone present.
A New Beginning
As the evening drew to a close, it was clear that this wasn’t an ending but a beginning. The cadets, no longer recruits, stood ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that awaited them. They have learned the importance of teamwork, resilience, and leadership, and these qualities will carry them far, both within the squadron and beyond.
To our new cadets: you have done yourselves proud. Welcome to the 863 family. The sky is no longer the limit—it is only the beginning.
To their families and friends: thank you for your support, encouragement, and faith in these remarkable young people. Your presence tonight made the occasion even more special.
And to the squadron staff and senior cadets: thank you for your guidance and dedication in shaping the next generation of cadets. Moments like these are a reminder of why we do what we do.
Closing Reflections
The passing out parade was not just a celebration; it was a reminder of the potential that lies within each of us when we commit to something greater. For the cadets, this is the start of an incredible journey filled with learning, adventure, and camaraderie.
Here’s to the future of 863 (Thurston) Squadron—stronger, prouder, and ready to reach new heights.
Per Ardua ad Astra.
