On Wednesday 27 August 2025, cadets from 863 (Thurston) Squadron set off from HQ at 07:30, brimming with energy. Even though the journey to Milton Keynes Snozone was slowed by heavy traffic, morale stayed high, and the cadets were buzzing with anticipation.
Snozone, based in the Xscape complex, is the UK’s largest indoor real snow centre, offering an authentic alpine experience with over 1,500 tonnes of real snow across a 170m slope. For our cadets, it was the perfect opportunity to develop their skills and push their confidence further on the snow.

A Full Morning of Learning
On arrival, cadets were kitted up and split into two-hour structured lessons with Snozone’s expert instructors. These sessions catered to every level of ability—ensuring that both complete beginners and those with some experience could progress at their own pace.

Many cadets successfully advanced to Level 2, developing their control, balance, and linking turns on steeper ground.
A smaller group achieved Level 3, skiing confidently at speed and demonstrating excellent technique—well on track for independent skiing at our next planned opportunity in October (TBC).
Meanwhile, a few of the 15 cadets who had already gained skills from holidays abroad or dry slope sessions went straight out onto the main slope, quickly showcasing what they had previously learned and enjoying more time practising independently.
Cadets & Staff Enjoying the Experience
Supported by Flt Lt Green and CI Sinnett, the atmosphere throughout the day was one of teamwork, encouragement, and plenty of laughs. Staff were delighted to see cadets growing in skill and confidence, while cadets relished the rare chance to spend a day on real snow together.

Breaks in the Alpine Kitchen café gave everyone a chance to recharge with hot food and drinks before heading back to the slopes for more runs and coaching.
Home With Smiles

By 15:30, the squad returned to HQ—tired, a little sore, but thrilled by the experience. The day had been more than just ski training; it was about personal growth, teamwork,
and representing 863 Squadron in public with pride and positivity.
A huge thank you goes to our cadets for their enthusiasm, and to Flt Lt Green and CI Sinnett for their leadership and encouragement throughout the day.
Another successful adventure for 863 Squadron—roll on October for the next step towards independent skiing!
