Summer Camp 2026 – An Incredible Start!

The first few days of Summer Camp have been packed from start to finish, and by all accounts our cadets have thrown themselves into every challenge with enthusiasm, determination and a real sense of adventure. Although I'm not on camp myself, the updates and reports coming back from staff paint a fantastic picture of what has already been an unforgettable experience.
Sunday – A Flying Start
The journey north included a stop at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford, giving everyone the opportunity to explore one of the UK's premier aviation museums before arriving on camp. From historic aircraft to cutting-edge aerospace technology, the visit provided a fascinating insight into the RAF's past, present and future, setting the perfect tone for the week ahead.
For many cadets, seeing iconic aircraft up close is something they'll remember for years to come, and it certainly helped build the excitement for everything that was still to come.
Monday – Climbing New Heights
Monday morning saw the cadets head to the impressive Preston Indoor Climbing Wall, where they were challenged both physically and mentally as they tackled a variety of climbing routes.
With the support of qualified instructors, including Charlotte Brently from 471 (Hesketh Bank & Tarleton) Squadron, every cadet was encouraged to push themselves, develop confidence and support one another. It was fantastic to hear how quickly many of the cadets progressed throughout the session, overcoming nerves and celebrating each other's achievements.
The afternoon brought a complete change of pace with an action-packed game of Laser Tag in Morecambe. Teamwork, communication and quick thinking were the order of the day as cadets worked together to outmanoeuvre the opposition. Safe to say there were plenty of smiles, laughter and friendly competition!
Tuesday – Engineering the Future
Tuesday provided an incredible opportunity that many people never experience.
The cadets visited BAE Systems at Samlesbury, one of the UK's most advanced aerospace manufacturing facilities. During the visit they took part in an engaging STEM programme, designing their own drone concepts before presenting their ideas to others—developing not only engineering skills but also confidence in presenting and working as a team.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the factory tour, where the cadets saw first-hand how components for the Eurofighter Typhoon are manufactured, alongside work on the UK's next-generation combat aircraft, Tempest. Seeing world-leading aerospace engineering in action gave everyone a real appreciation of the innovation, precision and teamwork involved in producing some of the world's most advanced aircraft.
As if that wasn't enough for one day, the evening saw our cadets join 345 (Lancaster) Squadron for a battlefield exercise. Working alongside another squadron added a new dynamic, allowing cadets to practise communication, leadership and teamwork in a realistic field exercise while making new friends from across the organisation.
So Far...
Only three days into camp, our cadets have already:
Explored one of the RAF's premier museums.
Challenged themselves on an indoor climbing wall.
Enjoyed an exciting laser tag competition.
Visited one of the UK's leading aerospace facilities.
Designed and presented their own drone concepts.
Seen Typhoon and Tempest production up close.
Taken part in an evening battlefield exercise alongside another squadron.
Most importantly, the reports from staff are overwhelmingly positive. The cadets have represented the squadron brilliantly, embraced every opportunity placed in front of them and continued to demonstrate the teamwork, respect and determination that make us incredibly proud.
