863 (Thurston) Squadron vs 301 (Bury St Edmunds) Squadron
Following the morning’s/Afternoon Battle of Britain Parade, cadets from 863 (Thurston) Squadron and 301 (Bury St Edmunds) Squadron came together once more – this time not on parade, but on the football field. The match, played in the bright afternoon sunshine at Thurston HQ, proved to be the perfect way to round off a day of remembrance.
The weather could not have been better: clear skies, warm air, and just enough breeze to keep the pace lively. With such ideal conditions, both teams were able to give their very best, putting on a thrilling display of skill, teamwork, and determination.

From the very first whistle, the game was played in great spirits. Both squads showed superb sportsmanship, applauding good tackles, encouraging their teammates, and respecting the referee’s decisions without hesitation. This was more than just a game of football; it was an opportunity for cadets from neighbouring squadrons to strengthen bonds, test their skills, and enjoy the friendly rivalry that has become a highlight of the year.

The match itself was packed with energy and excitement. Thurston took an early lead, with Cpl Scarbro proving unstoppable up front, finding the back of the net three times over the course of the game to complete a well-earned hat-trick. Cdt Heighway, Cdt Jepp, and Cdt Crissall each added to the tally, ensuring 863’s goal sheet was well spread across the team.
301 (Bury St Edmunds) put up a determined fight, refusing to be outdone. Their attacking play was sharp and their goals well-taken, reminding everyone that this fixture is always closely contested. The visitors netted three goals of their own, keeping the pressure on Thurston throughout the match and ensuring the crowd had plenty to cheer about from both sides.
In the end, the scoreline read Thurston 6 – Bury St Edmunds 3, a result that reflected the effort, passion, and commitment of both teams. The players shook hands with smiles all round, each squadron recognising the quality of their opponents and the value of the experience.

For Thurston, the victory marked a step closer to retaining this Friendly Football Match Cup, which currently sits proudly in the Squadron’s cabinet. Yet, more important than the trophy was the sense of participation, teamwork, and enjoyment shared by every cadet who took part – a true reflection of what the Air Cadets stands for.
With memories of a superb game in the sunshine, and with anticipation already building for the next meeting, Rememberance Day, this year’s Battle of Britain football match will be remembered not only for the goals scored, but for the friendships forged and the sportsmanship on display.
