Yesterday, 22 cadets from 863 (Thurston) Squadron had a fantastic opportunity to step out of their usual routine and onto the mats at Woolpit Village Hall. They joined a special two-hour session hosted by Adrian, Sensei of Inori Aikido, where they learned essential safe falling techniques. This experience not only built their physical skills but also boosted their confidence and resilience, all while strengthening ties with the local community.
Learning to Fall Safely with Expert Guidance
Adrian, the dojo’s Sensei, welcomed the cadets warmly and led the session with great patience and expertise. He carefully demonstrated each technique step by step, ensuring everyone understood how to perform them safely. The focus was on overcoming the natural fear of falling, a vital skill for both martial arts and everyday life.

The cadets practised several key aikido falling techniques, including:
Mae ukemi (forward breakfall)
Ushiro ukemi (backward breakfall)
Yoko ukemi (side breakfall)
Zenpo kaiten ukemi (forward rolling breakfall)
Each move was broken down into manageable steps, allowing cadets to build confidence gradually. Adrian’s clear instructions and calm encouragement helped the group feel comfortable and motivated to try their best.

A Shared Experience with Inori Aikido Students
The session was not just for the cadets. Adrian’s current students also joined in, creating a lively and supportive atmosphere. This mix of newcomers and experienced practitioners gave everyone a chance to practise and refresh their skills together. The cadets appreciated seeing how aikido techniques are applied by those who train regularly, and the Inori Aikido students enjoyed sharing their knowledge with enthusiastic young learners.
This interaction highlighted the value of community partnerships. It showed how local groups can come together to support each other’s growth and development, creating a positive environment for all involved.
Building More Than Just Physical Skills
The benefits of this aikido session went beyond learning how to fall safely. The cadets developed greater coordination, resilience, and self-discipline through the focused practice. These qualities are essential for their personal growth and for representing 863 (Thurston) Squadron with pride.

The cadets’ behaviour throughout the evening was exemplary. Their enthusiasm and willingness to participate fully reflected the strong values instilled by the squadron. They showed maturity and respect, making the squadron proud.
Thanks to the Squadron Staff and Sensei Adrian
This successful event would not have been possible without the dedication of the squadron staff who supervised and supported the cadets throughout the evening. Their commitment ensured a safe and organised environment, allowing the cadets to focus on learning and enjoying the experience.
Special thanks go to Adrian for his expert instruction and welcoming approach. His patience and skill made the session accessible and enjoyable for all, helping the cadets gain valuable new skills and confidence.
Strengthening Community Connections
This visit to Inori Aikido is a wonderful example of how 863 (Thurston) Squadron continues to build strong links with the local community. By engaging in activities like this, cadets gain practical skills and life lessons while fostering friendships and mutual respect with local organisations.
The squadron looks forward to more opportunities to work with Inori Aikido and other community groups, creating experiences that enrich the lives of cadets and strengthen community spirit.
