Thursday 5th December, from 1930 to 2100, 863 (Thurston) Squadron hosted its Annual Awards Evening, celebrating the incredible dedication and achievements of our cadets and staff throughout the past year. The event was graced by the presence of two distinguished guests: Air Vice-Marshal (AVM) and Squadron Leader Mark Brett, who joined us to honour the successes of our squadron.
A special thank you goes to our marvellous Master of Ceremonies, James Miles, who skillfully guided the evening with seamless transitions and perfectly timed sequences, making the event both engaging and memorable.
Cadet Presentations
The evening commenced with cadet presentations that showcased the wide array of activities and opportunities experienced over the year:
• CPL O’Flynn delivered a captivating recount of his experience flying in helicopters during his reward trip to Shawbury with FS Harris. This incredible opportunity, earned at last year’s awards evening, highlighted two action-packed days filled with unforgettable moments.
• CDT Millard and CPL Bunning shared their fond memories of attending the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), reflecting on the highlights of the event and their personal favorites from the day.
• CPL Skilling and CDT Scarbro reminded us of the excitement and camaraderie of the squadron summer camp. Their gratitude extended to the staff who ensured its success, from providing supervision to preparing meals.
• Finally, CDT O’Flynn and CDT Barbrooke spoke about the exhilaration of flying opportunities, including gliding and powered flight—remarkable events that exemplify the unique experiences available to our cadets.
Certificates and Awards
The second half of the evening focused on recognizing individual and collective achievements. Many cadets progressed through their academic classifications, advancing from Leading to Senior and even Master levels. A special highlight was the recognition of two cadets who achieved Instructor Cadet status, marking the return of this prestigious qualification after a long hiatus. This accomplishment will allow them to mentor newer cadets, passing on their knowledge and experience.
